Quaker Square

Quaker Square is a mall, hotel and dormitory for the University of Akron that's located in the former Quaker Oats mill in downtown Akron. The mill was built in 1932 and was originally thirty-six silos each 120 feet tall. They used to house as much as 1.5 million bushels of grain. Quaker Oats closed its doors in 1970 and was redesigned and opened as four shops and an ice cream parlor in 1975. If you're in the neighborhood, you can now buy a new fish tank filter and experience some of the city's history. Here is a little more about this fascinating site.

The Hilton Hotel Corporation bought the silos of the Quaker Oats mill in 1980 and turned them into a hotel with nearly two hundred rooms that are all completely round. The hotel was later purchased by the Crowne Plaza and renamed the Quaker Square Inn. It could be a new place to spend your vacation opposed to your regular trip to a Toronto bed & breakfast, for example. But, if you're planning to take advantage of this unique hotel option, you should act quickly.

In 2007, the University of Akron purchased the property with the plan of turning it into four hundred new residence rooms. There is currently a residence hall on the top floor of the complex but they have delayed plans for the complete residence for a few years. There are still eighteen offices who's leasing have been renewed for the next year. Once completed, this could be as nice a living experience for students as a new condo Toronto based.

Right beside the hotel complex is a shopping experience like no other in the Quaker Station Mall. The General Store is a nostalgic store that provides old-fashioned candy, home-style cookies and various gift baskets. Instead of a gift certificate for a day spa St Louis-based many of the items here would be a great gift option. The Newsstand will provide you with all of the country's top newspapers, magazines and comic books.

There are also two restaurants in the Quaker Station complex. The Trackside Grille is inside an authentic Pullman rail car and serves all of the regular grill house fare from steaks to sandwiches. The Candy Store has lunch-style food as well as a huge collection of desserts and ice creams. Plus, you won't need to sell your jewelry to enjoy either of these establishments.

Quaker Square is located on South Broadway Street in the heat of downtown Akron. It is within walking distance from many of the city's other attractions, including the EJ Thomas Performing Arts Hall and all of the shopping and entertainment options on Main Street. The site is also on the National Register of Historic Places.
