If you''re moving to Akron with your family, you''re no doubt having some trouble getting your kids to come around to the idea. Being young, they can''t handle things like an adult. Hockey camps, school friends, and their neighborhood are some of the most important things in their lives and they''ll have to give it all up along with the old city. However, you might be able to make a little headway by emphasizing all the fun they might have in their new home. There is no shortage of fun things to do for families, big or small in Akron Ohio. Here are some of the favorites.
Outdoor Activities
Living at St Andrew on the Green - 9 Burnhamthorpe Rd. in Toronto has probably endeared your children to snow. They''ll be happy to know that all the winter activities they love, like hockey, skiing, and sledding, are popular with Akron kids as well. Lock 3 Park is a popular place for outdoor fun. In the winter it''s turned into an ice skating rink, and in the summer it''s home to fields where you can play community sports. If you like to hike or bike together as a family, a ride on the Towpath Trail that follows the Ohio and Erie Canal might be just the thing to talk over all the new things you''ve seen and done since you moved.
Museums
We''ll be the first to admit that it''s sometimes hard to get kids interested in learning, especially outside of school hours. A graph of time and frequency standards at the science museum will only hold their attention for a few seconds at most. However, there are plenty of interesting things to see in Akron that will hold the attention of even the most ADHD child. The National Inventors Hall of Fame is full of weird and wonderful gadgets and contraptions to look at while the American Marble and Toy Museum shows off kids'' favorite things: toys!
A Night Out
Children like to have a night out on the town every once in a while, just like their parents. It makes them feel more grown up to see a concert or play or eat in a fancy restaurant like the adults. While girls might appreciate going with their mom or aunt to the day spa, gifts of tickets to major sporting events are more popular with boys. Some things you could do as a family include: going to an Akron Aeros baseball game at Canal Park, seeing a play at the Akron Civic Theater, taking a trip to the skatepark at Derby Downs, or going to a movie.
Festivals and Seasonal Events
There are numerous festivals hosted in Akron throughout the year that have something for both kids and adults. Perhaps a street fair would have a children''s entertainer and a car sweepstakes contest. The world championship Soap Box Derby is held in July each year. Entering is a popular bonding activity for kids and their parents. There''s also a hamburger festival in the same month and a big First Night party with concerts and fireworks for New Years Eve.
